Major Requirements
Programs in this area prepare graduate students to pursue careers in research, teaching, teacher education, curriculum and test development, and the administration of English language arts programs, as well as clinical and assessment services. Reading and literacy instruction for elementary, secondary, college, and adult audiences are covered in basic and advanced courses.
Master’s programs in Literacy Education: Birth-Grade 6 and Literacy Education: Grades 5-12 are offered to those holding a teaching certificate in another area and are seeking initial literacy certification. The programs also fulfill the master’s degree requirement for permanent or professional certification in the area of the first certificate.
Changes to the Literacy Program have been proposed, and are currently under review at the time of publication of this catalog. If approved, these changes will allow students to be eligible for both New York State Literacy Education teacher certifications (Literacy B-6 and Literacy 5-12) in one 30 credit master’s degree program. This proposed program will be available to both full time (to be completed in 12 months) and part time students, and will have some exciting updates to the curriculum, in light of the needs of today’s schools. Updates regarding the status of this proposed program will be posted on our website: soe.syr.edu.
