Overview:

The minor in TESOL is an 18-credit level program focusing on the teaching of English to speakers of other languages. It prepares individuals for entry-level positions teaching English in a variety of educational, community, business, and government contexts, with the exception of public K-12 school settings.

Admission:

Admission to the minor will be open to currently enrolled undergraduate students at Syracuse University. Interested students will be encouraged to contact the coordinator of the minor to develop a program of study.

Student Learning Outcomes


1. Use knowledge of conventions to write in styles appropriate for various discourse communities and apply citation styles appropriately in writing

2. Use rhetorical and sociolinguistic knowledge to compose a variety of texts for different situations while employing rhetorical appeals to effectively persuade audiences

3. Use critical thinking to recognize logical fallacies and summarize and synthesize readings to develop and support an argument

4. Use knowledge of digital literacy to understand, create, and explain visual graphs and images

5. Use strategic knowledge to draft, revise, and self-edit writing independently and collaboratively. Manage gaps in one’s knowledge of language and context

6. Express ideas with appropriate vocabulary and grammar

7. Communicate effectively in academic oral presentations and classroom situations

8. Comprehend academic texts

9. Comprehend academic lectures

Minor Requirements


Students must complete 18 credits, 12 of which must be at the 300 level or above.

Language Requirement:


One (three or four-credit) course in a language other than English or demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English.

Elective Courses:


Students will choose two courses from an approved set as long as a total of 12 credits in the minor are taken at the 300 level or above.

Minimum Credits: 18


Notes:


Elective substitutions may be made with the permission of the coordinator.
