The major in History of Architecture explores the history of styles and monuments. It also provides you with a rich and nuanced understanding of how humanity has interacted with the environment by constructing buildings and cities and by manipulating the landscape, under different social, political, technological and economic circumstances. The research and teaching specialties of the history of architecture faculty include Islamic architecture, architecture of the Middle Ages, 16th c. Italian architecture, French Early Modern architecture, American architecture, Medievalism, Indian architecture, and Southeast and East Asian architecture.

Student Learning Outcomes


1. Identify, explain, and analyze world works of architecture and urbanism from different eras

2. Explain and recognize the historical relationships between architectural culture, landscape and building production, technological development, and economic and political history

3. Analyze, critique, and develop current historiographical approaches and scholarly methodologies to the study of the built environment

4. Express ideas clearly through oral and visual presentations

5. Formulate an original thesis topic, synthesize and appraise scholarly information that pertains to that topic, and express ideas clearly through writing

Major Requirements


To fulfill the requirements of the Major in Architectural History, students must complete 30 credits of upper-division courses. Of the 30 total credits, 24 should be on history of architecture from the list below, 9 of which should be HOA courses and 15 of which should be ARC courses. The remaining 6 credits can be from the list below or any upper-division HOA courses. No credit for studio courses in art or music may be used for this major. Students may petition to have up to 9 credits of selected topics courses in architectural history (ARC or HOA) count toward the major.
