In addition to the professional education requirements mentioned above, students in science education complete the B.A.* with a major in the primary science area and the following requirements:
Core Requirements
Science education majors must complete the Liberal Arts Core curriculum with these additional specific requirements:
One approved history (HST) course
One social science course (other than history (HST) or psychology (PSY))
One fine arts within Arts and Sciences (FIA) course
One humanities course (other than history (HST) or fine arts (FIA)
One multicultural humanities or social science course Foreign language proficiency achieved in one of three ways:
- Passing of level three language in high school
- Passing of a competency test if language was learned through means other than formal study (i.e. foreign language spoken at home, etc.)
- Completing one of Syracuse University’s four-credit 101 language courses or its equivalent as determined by the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics
Science Content
Science majors are required to complete a major of no less than 30 credits in an area chosen from biology, chemistry, geology, or physics.
In addition to, or as part of, the major, students must complete an introductory laboratory sequence in a second science area.
One approved calculus course is also required.
*The B.S. degree may be earned in the primary science area instead of the B.A. with the completion of additional science requirements, paperwork, and an appropriate petition.
