Professional Option in Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Optometry, or Podiatry

The College of Arts and Sciences permits students who have been accepted to an accredited school of law, medicine, dentistry, optometry, or podiatry upon completion of three years of undergraduate work, to take the senior year in the professional school to which they have been admitted. Students who wish to exercise the professional option must give formal written notice of this intention to the Student Records Office in the College of Arts and Sciences as soon as they have been admitted to a professional school.
    To exercise the professional option students must

  1. complete 90 credits in the College of Arts and Sciences;
  2. have at least a 2.0 cumulative average for all work taken in the college;
  3. complete the Liberal Arts Core (if pursuing the standard arts and sciences program);
  4. complete 12 credits in upper-division courses toward major program requirements or complete the requirements specified by individual programs of study;
  5. file a letter of intent with the College of Arts and Sciences Student Records Office, including a proposed course of study, before the end of the sophomore year; and
  6. provide verification of acceptance to the Student Records Office in the College of Arts and Sciences, 329 Hall of Languages.
    Syracuse University grants the appropriate bachelor’s degree to students in the professional option who satisfy the following requirements:
  1. successful completion of three years in the College of Arts and Sciences as described above;
  2. successful completion of 30 credits in the professional school; and
  3. recommendation by the College of Arts and Sciences, after a review of the professional school’s transcript, that the degree be granted.
    Work completed in a graduate professional curriculum follows the Syracuse University guidelines in effect for all transfer credit; for example, grades must be C or better.
    The professional option is not retroactive. Students who do not follow the formal procedures are not eligible.

Transfer Students
Students who transfer to the College of Arts and Sciences may exercise the professional option if they complete 90 credits of liberal arts coursework. They must
  1. complete at least 60 credits in the College of Arts and Sciences;
  2. have at least a 2.0 cumulative average for all work taken in the college;
  3. complete the Liberal Arts Core (if pursuing the standard arts and sciences program);
  4. complete the minimum number of credits in upper-division courses toward major requirements or complete the requirements specified by the Selected Studies program; and
  5. submit a letter of intent, including a proposed course of study, to 329 Hall of Languages at the conclusion of the first semester in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Note: The availability of a professional option to qualified students in the College of Arts and Sciences does not imply assurance of admission to a school of law, medicine, dentistry, optometry, or podiatry. Professional schools vary in their admissions policies; many of them require a four-year degree. It is the individual student’s responsibility to make appropriate inquiries.
